Full of history, this
beautiful Chinese apothecary, pharmacy or medicine chest, dating to circa 1800's,
was used to store traditional herbs and medicines by Chinese medical doctors.
Made from lacquered elm with mortise and tenon construction.

33 drawers
(8 large and 25 small) and
2-door cabinet
with original lacquer, a lovely patina and brass metal hardware.
Chinese script found on some drawer sides. Each drawer is unique and rustic.
The center cabinet is deep and spacious (24 inches H x 24 inches W x 21 inches D) --the doors are carved with simple diamond and round designs.
In Chinese medicine, the doctor created and dispensed medicines and stored them in chests like this one.
Excellent condition, consistent with age and use.
We originally purchased this piece at an antique store in NYC in the late 1990's and we were told that it had been built in China in the mid 1800's.
